Jonathan is one of just a handful of native North American players to be playing in the NHL. After spending a couple of years in the American Hockey League. His career took a bit of a downturn the last two seasons in San Jose.
Jonathan Cheechoo has almost come full circle in his hockey career. From humble beginnings on the tip of the mighty James Bay in his tiny community of Moose Cree First Nation. Jonathan played his youth hockey games in Moose, three miles across the water. The only way to make this trip in the summer is by boat. Jonathan first started playing hockey at age three. His father would construct a small rink in the backyard, where he could practice his shooting. He took 500 shots everyday.
On October 10, 2002 in a game against the Detroit Red Wings, Jonathan Cheechoo became the first member of Moose Cree to play in the NHL. Cheechoo was wery healthy and fitness. He scored 47 points in the 2003-04 season. The 2005-06 season began good for Jonathan. He scored 15 points in the first 24 games. Cheechoo's team record 56 goals in 2005-06. In March 25th a game against Minnesota, Jonathan scored the first and last goal 5-1.
Jonathan is always around the puck. Jonathan skates toward areas that produce the best scoring opportunities. These patches of ice are manned by some of the most dangerous players, but with girt and brains.
